The other day Me, Oskar and our Chinese beerbike designer Baba went on a hunt to find several car parts that we need to construct the undercarriage of the beerbike. Our designer Baba, meaning Dad in Chinese, is the dad of Fanfan, a good friend of mine over here. He originally comes from the Beijing area but has already been living here in Kunming for over 50 years now working as a designer of building cranes. He looks remarkably young and vital for his 69 years and he is just a really nice guy with a grant affection for cycling and beers. Perfect. He likes to be called Dad by us. In fact I wouldn't even know his real name!
At the Suzuki dealer we were among other things looking for transmission parts and brakes of a Suzuki Alto as this model has about the same dimensions as our beerbike and is very affordable.
We filmed the entire process, as we will be doing from now on a regular base. The quality of the film might not be the best but I seriously had to scale down on the size to enable uploading on Youtube. The Kunming internet is kind of a bitch when it comes to uploading big files.
The ‘technical issues’ mentioned in the video by Oskar remained issues as it appeared that the over-complicated Suzuki alto was not the most suitable 'car parts donor' for our beerbike. Almost instantly it was decided (by baba, logically) that a Chinese small van called Wei Xing would be the second best alternative. A new version of this car goes for around 3000 Euro and therefore its parts should very well suite our student beerbike budget.
We managed to locate a Wei Xing car parts dealer in the North of town and after having explained them about our bike they assured us they could manage to order all our necessities.
And this is what the status is right now, we are waiting for the parts to come, once arrived baba will measure them and based on those dimension he can complete the technical drawings. It will take about ten days before we will have these drawings but then building should be able to commence.
